-More SFLers start chiming in on John Barnes increasingly overt tendency to write in extreme violence and violent sex in whatever story he writes

(2021 note: Seriously, it's became a fetish for John Barnes. The Bosnian-Serbian war of the 1990's really broke his brain.)

-First mention of the internet web search engine www.altavista.com

(2021 note: Altavista was one of the better internet/web crawling search engines on the Internet until Google stole their entire business model of selling ads in search/paid search rankings)

-SFL people start discussing why Ray Bradbury is so disliked by hardcore SFF fandom. Was it his popularity & success writing outside the SFF genres, anger that Bradbury rose up to become a professional writer while a SFF while other aspiring authors SFF failed to rise up as well, that Bradbury didn't write science-fiction as per hardcore SFF fandom definition of science-fiction, that Bradbury didn't include nods to SFF fandom or other SFF authors in work like virtually every other SFF fan turned professional SFF writer, or that at as a young SFF fan at local/regional SFF fandom meetings Bradbury easily got bored and would give hotfoots at LASFS meetings?

(2021 note: Hardcore SFF fans in the SFL really tried to enforce the "Bradbury is disliked because he was a punk at SFF meetings growing up" narrative but their sheer anger at Bradbury makes it clear that hardcore SFF fandoms hatred of Bradbury boils down to Bradbury's popularity as a professional author in multiple literary genres burns them up hard because they-the-hardcore-SFF-fandom should have had his success not him.)

-A letter to the editor of the newspaper Washington Post complaining about the Washington Post downplaying Paul Linebarger's aka Cordwainer Smith's role in teaching pysops torture techniques during his tenure at the US School of Americas

(2021 note: Paul Linebarger was definitely CIA adjacent throughout his civil servant career with the US Government. And the US School of Americas is now called the The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation)

-The BAEN BOOKS official website gets mentioned again.

(2021 note: This is 1997 so mention of Internet websites existing is still new and rare)

-A SFLer brings up a valid critique of Gene Wolfe's Soldier of the Mist series: why was Latin being spoken by the narrator at the time of Xerxe's invasion of Greece? Latin as a language was extremely regional at that period.

-The STAR WARS SPECIAL EDITION remasters of the original Star Wars movies start hitting their release dates to the public. Fans mostly like the new content but aren't sure of certain additions. The HAN SHOT FIRST meme continues to build up steam.

(2021 note: The really weird thing to me is the SFL Archives concensus that Empire Strikes Back is the worst and weakest of the original Star Wars movie trilogy. Something about George Lucas's vision being diluted and the heroes not winning are the vibes SFLers are telegraphing when disussing why they feel Empire Strikes Back is the inferior movie.)

-Both a SPAWN movie and a SPAWN cartoon series are in the works in 1997.

-Someone describes the 1995 movie HACKERS in comparison to IRL Hackers/Hacker Culture as: "On the Sid and Nancy scale, "Hackers" is the Village People - after they went New Romantic."

-A new bunch of SFF adajacent tv-shows hit American network television: THE PRETENDER, THE PROFILER, SPY GAME 1997, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER etc. Special mention is made of THE PROFILER doing a cross-over episode with THE PRETENDER. SFLers like the BUFFY tv-series pilot but miss Donald Sutherland and Paul Reubens from the original movie version.

-Much SLIDERS the tv-series discussion. John Rhys-Davies leaving the show and the addition of Kari Wuhrer to the cast. The dumbing down of the story plots. The bad science causes much discussion which shockingly hasn't aged too badly. For someone who hates SLIDERS for denying George RR Martin of his own SFF tv-series, Gharlane of Eddore sure does religously hate watch SLIDERS...and he absolutely hates Kari Wuhrer acting/looks/body fat percentage/etc.

(2021 note: People on Something Awful forums book-barn subforum who interacted with Gharlane of Eddore back in the 1990's on usenet have fond memories of him. Me just knowing Gharlane from what he posts in the SFL Archives is where I heavily disagree with those people. Gharlane isn't that great, and giving off big proto-incel vibes anytime he talks about female actors and their acting/looks/movement.)

-SFLers start tearing apart the extremely contrived setting/plot/technology/characters/motivations in James Halperin's THE TRUTH MACHINE.

-Terry Pratchett's FEET OF CLAY comes out, and a small portion if SFLers find it contrived and that it turns the Flanderization dial up on most of the established Watch characters.

(2021 note: I sort of agree with the SFLers seeing a decline in Pratchett's Discworld writing at this point in time. INTERESTING TIMES was the decline point for me.)

-Levar Burton's 1997 SFF novel AFTERMATH comes out and gets lots of closeted racists/C.H.U.D.'s/and "actually I have a black friend so I can't be racist" SFLer's to self-out themselves in seeing various things that exist/do not exist in Burton's 1997 book AFTERMATH.

-SFF authors start nakedly self promoting their work on SFL Archives again.

(2021 note: The SFL mailing list moderator has a inconsistent stance on these kinds of posts. Yes, I am still kind of pissed that the SFL mailing list moderator banned the Del-Rey Internet newsletter from being reposted to the SFL Archives. The Del-Rey Internet newsletter was full of factual details of how a mid-sized book publisher operated in reality and was the single best thing/most interesting and anticipated read for me in the SFL Archives before it got banned.)

-Foundation and Empire being the red-haired unacknowledged book when Isaac Asimov's Foundation series gets republished by a new book publisher.

-In 1997 a good resource for writers of all kinds was the WRITERS DIGEST series.

-Sam Raimi's 1997 tv-series SPY GAME comes out and everything about it sounds unreal and a shared collective joke that I broke my do-not-look-things-mentioned-up-on-the-internet readthrough rule for the 11th and confirmed that: Yes, SPY GAMES 1997 was real.

(2021 note: To be fair to Sam Raimi, he has been attached to many bizarre sounding tv shows. CLEOPATRA 2525 for example, somehow CLEOPATRA 2525 existed for 2 seasons.)

-Tom Hanks the actor enters the producer "I've got fuck you money" stage of his professional career when he becomes the producer of the upcoming 12 part miniseries FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON

-Warner Brothers announces they are working on a live-action JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA tv-series, which never gets past the pre-production stage.

-A extremely not-Mad SFLer posts a review of Lee Goldberg's satiric parody of the television industry and SFF fandom novel BEYOND THE BEYOND aka DEAD SPACE that is so long and meandering the SFL mailing list moderator has to break it up into 3 parts. SFL Posts having to be broken up into multiple parts has happened before, but those SFL posts usually involved talking about multiple subjects or things in the SFF genres.

(2021 note: The review of BEYOND THE BEYOND/DEAD SPACE gives off the same extremely hurt-feelings vibe/"how dare he have a career while I don't" vibes that Ray Bradbury invokes in hardcore SFF fandom. I solidly believe the author of the 3 part review spent 5 hours screaming this essay at top volume outside of whatever television production studio Lee Goldberg spends the most time at and also that the reviewer has at least 5 active "stay 100 feet away at all times" restraining orders versus various SFF authors and television production people. JMS for sure.)

-A SFLer relates a discussion they had with David Weber regarding the Honor Harrington series that includes lots of incoming spoilers and explanations for certain actions that I am not sure happened or not for real in the Honor Harrington series.

(2021 note: Stuff ranging from treecat intelligence, to various looming gambits, bonding and treecats, new spaceship technologies, and backstory Weber will be retconning into future HH stories.)

-Internet famous reviewer-savant Alan Sepinwall posts to the SFL Archives in 1997 strictly to negatively comment on Sam Raimi's SPY GAME tv-series premiere.

-The Kelsey Grammer/20,000 leagues under the sea bit from Saturday Night Live season 19 being a pedants delight in every shape and way.

-A SFLer reposts the highlights from a Armin Shimerman guest of honor appearance at SFF convention Vulkon 1997. Armin Shimerman  talked about various things DS9 and Star Trek related, both in-front of camera and BTS stuff that would be of deep retrospective interest to any fan of DS9.

-The SFL mailing list moderator promotes The Alexandria Digital Literature website, which comes off in 2021 as a very early version of the Good Reads book review/book recommendation website before it's buyout by Amazon.com

-One of the first mentions of the Internet Movie Database in the SFL Archives.

(2021 note: As I said earlier, mentions of websites was still new and rare in 1997. A website mentioned in 1997 still being around in 2021 is exponently more rare.)

-The author of BEYOND THE BEYOND/DEAD SPACE responds back to the reviewer who posted that so-long-it-had-to-broken-up-into-3-segments-for-inclusion-in-the-SFL-Archives negative review of the n BEYOND THE BEYOND stating that everyone in entertainment industry whose IRL names that got used in the book were clued-in by the author before publishing and gave their assent.

SFL Archives Volume 20a readthrough

3.7 mb raw text file

Pop culture references: "reminds me of George from Seinfeld. Both the reader and the character know that the lie is going to foul up somehow, but the character goes on and tells it anyhow.", Wing Commander 3 CD "acting", "fang dealers" at SFF conventions,

Technology callbacks: Pentium 90 CPU's, "negotiations with CD ROM game maker Legend", putting up a new kernel & tweaking TCP timeouts, installing dosemu, Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD), "I KNOW IT SAYS FTP, AS THE FILES ARE AT AN FTP SITE. BUT IF YOU ENTER THE LOCATION..", 2 terrible Ringworld PC games, RealAudio software.

1995 Death notices: Ian Ballantine, founder of multiple book publisher companies. Roger Zelazny, SF&F author.

-SFL Archives Vol 20a starts off with the mailing list moderator stating the various hardware and software upgrades planned for the server that runs the SF-LOVERS mailing list. Drastic cutbacks on the frequency of sending out SFL Digests are planned. At the 10% in Vol 20a, the SFL Archives comes back from 2 months of unplanned downtime (massive hardware failures), and experiences another couple of "mini" one-week outages throughout Vol 20a.

-Defenders of Jack Chalker appear, and try to explain away all the involuntary body-transformation/gender swapping/creepy sex scenarios inside Jack Chalker's stories since Well World book 1 back in 1977.

-New management has taken over on the literary estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Disney and the ERB estate are mentioned as working on a movie adaptation of A PRINCESS OF MARS.

(2021 note: It will take until 2012 for the much delayed A PRINCESS OF MARS movie adaptation to come out under the title JOHN CARTER (of Mars).)

-Frank Herbert discussion and the Dune series discussion. SFLers try to figure out what the face-dancers at the end of Chapterhouse Dune were planning, and are confused/not-confused by the Golden Path/The Scattering.

-A SFF convention experience blogger whose gimmick is being French-Canadian, posting half of their reviews of SFF conventions/panels/party rooms in American English, and the other half in Québécois.

-This quote could literally describe 90% of the most popular SF&F series of the 1980's & 1990's, however "seems to be a tendency to substitute torture for character building".

-There was another April Fools/April 1st SFL Archives joke this year. Essentially it was a digital POKEMON GO battle-royale based on various long-time SFLers posting styles. E. Leeper REVIEWS A BOOK. Gharlane of Eddore RANTS about a SFF tv-series, etc.

-SFLer's start discussing Harry Harrison's EDEN fantasy book series which features a alternate timeline where dinosaurs not got wiped by a mass extinction event 66 million years ago, and have evolved into humanoid shapes and starting to interact with early homo sapiens. Some like the thought put into the various dinosaur genetic engineering/bio-technologies, others are creeped out by the lizard/human sex in the first EDEN book.

(2021 note: Harry Harrison wrote one of my favorite books ever. However even as a Harry Harrison fan, his EDEN series is a safe series to skip over. Aka DO NOT READ THEM. I WARNED YOU.)

-SFF author Daniel Keys Moran appears to accuse Paramount Studios/STAR TREK VOYAGER producers of ripping off a spec script he pitched directly to Star Trek producers back in 1993.

(2021 note: Looked this up because Daniel Keys Moran has reliably been proved to be full of shit whenever he posts. The spec script DKM pitched to Paramount/Star Trek producers ended up as the basis for STAR TREK: DS9 season 4 episode "Hard Time". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Time_(Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine) )

-Lists and lists of mailing server lists serving various interests as of March 1995 - May 1995.

-The Franklin Mint ripping off the creator/being involved in lawsuits with the creator of the rulesets for STAR TREK TRI-DIMENSIONAL Chess Sets.

-Someone tries critiquing James Blish's A CASE OF CONSCIENCE, and gets every single detail wrong in it.

(2021 note: Sadly that impressive shit-posting effort does not get any responses posted to the SFL Archives.)

-L Sprague De Camp starts getting discussed and the people making arguments towards De Camp being good/salvaging the legacy of certain titles (CONAN THE BARBARIAN) make good sense.

-David Feintuch starts responding to the SFL Archives about his MIDSHIPMENS HOPE/SEAFORT SAGA series about various questions/concerns/homages to Horatio Hornblower SFLers have been discussing.

-John Barnes KALEIDOSCOPE CENTURY comes out, and nobody really feels or sees anything wrong with it intially. One or two SFLers note the vileness of the main character, the weird obsession with memes/social communication tools, but that's it.)

(2021 note: KALEIDOSCOPE CENTURY pioneered the term "SERBING" into SFF fiction. Do not look up that term unless you wantto read real life horror and war-crimes.)

-One usage for Harry Turtledoves alt-Civil War fiction stories, they redeem certain mega-fuckups of the US Civil War by.

(2021 note: Google US Civil War & the Crater for one of the really terrible mass-death mega-fuckups of the US Civil War.)

-Noted SFL shitposter Gharlane of Eddore makes a series of spectacularly wrong predictions about what upcoming tv-series XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS will be about.

-Something about the dreaded CHTHON AWARD which I'm not going to even bother writing a year 2021 aside about.

-A whole bunch of tv series get cancelled. Space Precinct, Sliders, VR5, Earth 2, Langoliers, and fans of those cancelled tv-shows immediately start sharing mailing addresses of TV network executives in efforts to grass-roots renew those cancelled tv shows.

-A few SFLers try to man-explain the "real story" behind Apollo 13's explosion to the rest of the SFL Archives.

-OMNI magazines switches to a quarterly release schedule.

-Cyberpunk fanzine CHEAP TRUTH gets mentioned again, with various SFLers trying to define what is "cyberpunk", and who wrote/writes cyberpunk stories.

-Heavy Robert Adams discussion, especially the hearsay factor behind the narrator of Adam's HORSECLAN setting trying to describe things to a audience decades and decades later.

-Harlan Ellison on journalists: "I am not a journalist! I do not give blow-jobs to chickens!"

-GOR series discussion. Fans of GOR bring up that many of the most popular 1980s & 1990s SFF stories are deeply more fucked up than John Norman ever got, and that GOR novels are still selling well.

-Alfred Bester discussion. WHO HE, THE COMPUTER CONNECTION, Bester burning out hard, etc.

-BABYLON 5 stuff. Insanely huge amount of Babylon 5 series discussion. I am 110% burnout on Babylon 5 fandom & reading JMS flameout/humblebrag/bus-throw/humblebrag/bitch at 100% accurate fan predictions at this point, and not going to bother writing about Babylon 5 or what JMS posted to the SF-LOVERS mailing list in detail anymore.

(2021 note: My 110% burn-out on BABYLON 5 was something I never expected to happen.)

-Charles Platt is totally not-resentfull that Octavia Butler won a MacArthur Fellows Program grant. Charles Platt is also totally not claiming the only reason Octavia Butler won a MMacArthur Fellows Program grant is because she is female and black. Oh wait, I was wrong. Charles Platt is totally resentful and extremely racist.

(2021 note: Word search SFL Archives Vol 20a for "13 Jun 1995 20:14:58 -0400" cp@panix.com (Charles Platt) to find Charles Platt's hateful email post.)

-Gregory Benford outs himself as a "the (US Confederate States of America) South will rise AGAIN" SFF author in his GALACTIC CENTER SAGA.

-Introduction of the Changling Race aka the Dominion has more than a few 1995 SFLers seeing rip-offs from John W Campbells WHO GOES THERE short story, which of course skews into John Carpenters THE THING (1982).

-First tentative discussions of the DOCTOR WHO (1996) tv-movie. Casting still undecided, plot undecided, it will involve the BBC though.

-The SFLer who melted the fuck down about WARGAMES 1983 returns to the SF-LOVERS mailing list for the first time in 11 years to post about a Forrest J. Ackerman interview with Professor Neon(?) available via RealAudio streaming.

-Death notices: Keith Laumer, Ishiro Honda, Brandon Lee, Avram Davidson, Lester Del Rey, and Richard Webb.

-Unusual SFL Archives requests:

>Fan Societies/groups

>Canadian slave magic

>Science catches SF

>hyper-intelligent space beings

>homosexuality in SF

>Connecticut Yankee Syndrome

>Best time travel

>Humor in SF

>access to ST: TOS & TNG, Robotech and other novels for blind people

>SF authors of the Catholic faith

>Early Fantasy (1900-1950)?

-Del Rey & TOR Books editors start posting in the SFL Archives. The Del Rey editors effort-post about various decisions/things that happen behind-the-scenes at Del Rey...meanwhile the TOR Books senior editors opt for "yes/no this book is/is not published by TOR" responses.

(2021 note: The Del Rey newsletters are really worth checking out if you want behind-the-scenes info on how book cover art is chosen, why certain authors get published/republished, the mechanics behind doing print runs and interviews with different SF&F series authors.)

-Discussion of now long forgotten tv-series TIME TRAXX, SPACE RANGERS, GOLDEN YEARS, etc.

-Editors from TOR Books & Del Rey books start posting in the SFL Archives. The TOR Books editors opt for snide 2 paragraph posts while the Del Rey editors effort-post.

-The BABYLON 5 pilot episode The Gathering is produced and released to mostly favorable SFL Archives reaction. CGI effects look good/bad, characterization is rough, dialogue is worse, but the costuming is ace plus.

(2021 note: All JMS comments on BABYLON 5 have been put into a dedicated post here https://nothing2seeherepleasedisperse.blogspot.com/2021/01/sfl-archives-1993-compiled-posts-from-j.html )

-Let the record state that bhoughto@xxxx.xxxx.xxx really knows his pornography.

2021 note: bhoughto's post heavily reminded me of:

-Writing letters directly to heads of TV Networks about un-cancelling tv-series becomes a big thing. QUANTUM LEAP, SPACE RANGERS, HIGHLANDER, FOREVER KNIGHT, etc.

-The TEKUMEL RPG standing out from other fantasy RPG settings because it's not so boringly medieval Europe, re-hashed with orcs.

-PLANET OF THE APES movie franchise & book timeline discussion. SFLer's see at least 2 timelines for the movies, with alternate dimensions.

-STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE premieres, and most SFLer's have negative reactions to everything & everyone in it.

(2021 note: This is a typical reaction whenever a new Star Trek series comes out. THE NEXT GENERATION had the same thing happen, VOYAGER same thing, ENTERPRISE same thing, DISCOVERY same thing, LOWER DECKS, same thing.)

-Damon Knight writes an open-letter to the internet complaining about a mean career overview Algis Budrys wrote about Damon Knight.

(2021 note: Damon Knight loved to abuse his power as editor-author, and had hyper-thin skin. AKA Damon Knight could dish out criticism 24/7/365 but could not handle any criticism of himself.)

-Interview with Godzilla movie series soundtrack composer Akira Ifukube.

-ClariNet's The Hugo and Nebula Anthology 1993 CDROM which contained ebook versions of all nominated Hugo & Nebula award stories.

-Marion Zimmer Bradley, Mercedes Lackey, and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro react to unauthorized fan fiction set in their literary universes getting published in fanzines/GEnie/SF&F periodicals, destroying months of work when book publishers/magazines refuse to publish their versions of the same stories.

(2021 note: MZB's version of how things worked out is suspect as hell, even before the SFWA White Knight chimes in to give their own pro-MZB take on the matter.)

-Intense David Brin UPLIFT universe discussion ranging from uplift methods, debates about Herbie, inter-galactic Libraries, wolfling cultures, and why Earth managed to be wolflings in 7 galaxies full of Uplifted races Uplifting away.

-David Milner firmly establishes himself as the resident Godzilla movie franchise/Kaiju movie subject matter expert.

-P.J. Plauger being inescapable if you were both a Science-Fiction fan and a C programmer.

-QUANTUM LEAP airs the back-half of it's final season. Most people see a huge drop in show quality and self-contradiction of internal rules the show had previously set. Lots of debate as to whether NBC or Don B is to blame for the decline/switch in the show's focus for the final season.

-A Canadian SF&F convention called WOLFCON implodes in real time on the SFL Archives. Extremely angry management people ban each other plus another local convention (KingCon) completely, both sides air grievances, both sides backtrack with more grievances...and all of a sudden WOLFCON is on a 2yr hiatus (lawsuits pending on both sides?).

-Someone starts posting biweekly lists of what movies are in pre-production/production from January 1993 to May 1993, then gives up.

(2021 note: These lists are interesting/worth reading by a scifi film historian because so many movies that came out decades later are listed as being worked on/optioned.)

-Rabid Jerry Pournelle & Larry Niven defenders defend all things written by Pournelle & Niven, especially the dated racist/sexist/islamophobic/etc stuff.

-SFLer's begin to turn on Orson Scott Card, noting OSC's one note-storytelling method of "child main character gets tortured" and OSC's obsession with working Mormon lore into every new series/story.

-Extended Convention discussion on all fronts. How to manage art shows, staffing, weapons policies, hotel bids, the downsides of airing SF&F movies or tv-series, Secret masters of fandom,

-6+ years later, the events of BOSKONE 24 & how the NEFSA handled BOSKONE 25 are still bringing up anger. Things are not helped by everyone involved in managing BOSKONE 25 tripling down on defensive posting.

(2021 note: I came into this readthrough attempt non-committal on SF&F conventions and how they were run. 22 SFL Archives Volumes later, I utterly loathe everyone associated with the 1980s-1990s version of NEFSA, the management committee behind BOSKONE conventions for being ultra-beyond terrible hyper-toxic.)

-During discussion of draconian security at certain conventions, one SFLer(Gharlan of Eddore) describes the modular cosplay Wizards Stave they like to bring to conventions

One of my favorite costume props is my "talking stave."  It's a carved,

bejewelled, battery-powered six-foot wizard's staff with L.E.D.'s that

flash in controlled patterns, several dedicated microprocessor chips,

a voice synthesizer, a couple of music synth chips, and two megs of RAM

that hold whatever music I've downloaded from the totable cpu I keep in

the hotel room.  (AND is 2.5" max diameter, thinner most places.)

Even though the tube is custom-machined aircraft aluminum (under all the

anodization and wood-strip overlay) it weighs about twenty-thirty pounds.

(Depends on whether I have the Big Battery Pack or the Little Battery Pack

in it, and whether I have the tuned-port speaker modules mounted on the

ends... it's a modularly configurable wizard's stave, you see.)

And yet, the last time I tried to carry it through the halls at Boskone, I

got jumped by "security" because they were afraid I was going to "hit

someone" with a prop I'd been working on, off and on, for several years.

Riiiiiiiiight

-DOORWAYS, a tv-series pilot written by George RR Martin about a group of people dimension-travelling sounds like the inspiration behind a later scifi tv-series called SLIDERS

-The Exclusion Act at the first WorldCon in NYC (1939?) featuring Sam Moskowitz & Donald Wollheim.

-Why in 1953, did Forry Ackerman, the first SciFi fan to receive a Hugo Award, immediately give his Hugo Award to Ken Slater?

(2021 note: Nobody answered this query. Mildly curious at the answer.)

-SFL April Fools 1993: A special SF-LOVERS Digest devoted to April Fools posts went out, the jokes were ok to eh.

-One SFLer waging a one-man war vs the CONFRANCISCO convention. Why did CONFRANCISCO 1993 break established Hugo Award nomination procedures about including the previous years WorldCon attendees in the nomination process? Why did CONFRANCISCO lie about hotel availability? Why is CONFRANCISCO full of SMOF's?

-John Brunner's work being banned from a un-named publisher/bookstore chain when they found out he was the same John Brunner that wrote a bunch of anti-nuclear war stuff.

-JURASSIC PARK 1993 comes out and the last 7 weeks of SFL Archives Vol 18a are almost exclusively dedicated to Jurassic Park movie/book discussion with side-conversations about Michael Crichton's research/anti-technology bias as a author.
